Should we enable AI enhancements for listings?
We’re always trying to make it better, funner and faster for people to buy and sell on Recess. We’re debating whether we should make it easier for parents to enhance their listing photographs with AI. What do you all think? As a seller I definitely want to make my photos look as good as possible. But as a buyer, I wanna make sure the photos are 100% accurate and reflect the true appearance of the product? Would love to hear what everyone here thinks? Do use AI to enhance your product images? Why or why not?

I also created this short video, framing up the problem.

I am a buyer and a seller and my vote is definitely no. As a buyer AI enhancement deters me. I wonder if what I’m seeing is really an accurate depiction of the item. If AI enhances an item for the better in a way that misrepresents it - what if the buyer is unhappy? As a high volume seller I don’t have time to wait for AI to edit pictures. I also dislike the AI generated descriptions, it’s so slow when listing it makes it hard to list many things efficiently. I do edit my photos to remove the background after seeing a lot of feedback that this is the best way to get your item “seen” in Google searches and thus potentially more buyers.

Hey@Anonymous
- this is really good feedback, thanks for sharing! I agree that the white background is categorically different than then other more substantive enhancements. What about for parents who do this on their own. Should we allow that? It’s not yet very pervasive but I’m seeing it more and more.

I could see AI being helpful in some contexts. For example, “show this furniture in my room” (uploading a picture of a room). Or “what would this shirt look like on me/my kid?” Bonus points if this can be done locally on-device for privacy/security.

Thanks for the feedback Matt! A bunch of retailers do this, although I haven’t seen an experience that’s really great.
